SHIPMENT PLANNING GUIDE
LCL vs FCL for furniture: how to compare the options
Compare the complete shipment cost and handling plan. LCL shares container space; FCL reserves a container. Cargo volume alone does not establish which option is best for a particular shipment.
LCL and FCL at a glance
| Question | LCL: shared container | FCL: dedicated container |
|---|---|---|
| How is space used? | Your goods share space with other shipments. | A container is reserved for the shipment. |
| What should I check? | Consolidation handling, destination fees and minimum charges. | Loading plan, door clearance, securing and unloading access. |
| Does low CBM prove it is cheaper? | No. Ask for the full origin-to-destination scope. | No. Compare an equivalent route, ready date and service scope. |
| What about fragile furniture? | Declare fragility and stacking restrictions before pricing. | Confirm packing and securing even in a dedicated container. |
| What data makes comparison useful? | Final packed dimensions, gross weight, route and ready date. | The same cargo data, plus a feasibility check for loading. |
When LCL is worth considering
LCL can suit smaller shipments that do not justify a dedicated container. Ask about consolidation, destination handling, minimum charges, and the full delivery scope. Furniture packaging should account for shared handling and any stacking restrictions.
When FCL is worth considering
FCL can suit larger shipments or cargo that benefits from a dedicated loading plan. Confirm usable container capacity, door opening, weight limits, and how the goods will be secured. A cubic-volume calculation is not proof that a particular item fits through a container door.
Compare like-for-like quotations
Use the same collection address, destination, ready date, cargo details, and delivery scope for both options. Separate pickup, origin handling, main carriage, destination charges, delivery, and excluded items. Ask how storage or delays are charged and how long the rate remains valid.
Avoid a universal break-even number
There is no reliable universal CBM threshold at which FCL becomes cheaper. Route, available capacity, cargo shape, non-stackability, and local charges change the comparison. Request both options when your shipment is near the practical decision point.
Bring the right information
Send the final packed dimensions and gross weights, not only product dimensions. Include photographs, delivery access details, and whether partial shipments are acceptable. Use our CBM tool to prepare a volume estimate, then ask for a loading and price assessment.
